Hi guys,
This is my first post on what will hopefully be a long journey for me. My name is Ali Shams, a recent college graduate and prospective law student. In hopes of gaining some insight into what could possibly be my profession I decided to take some time off and actually get my hands dirty working in a firm. I sent out my resume to several firms, and went through the tedious interview process. I would enter these dull and boring offices and instantly be turned off. Part of me wanted to bomb the interviews so that I wouldn’t feel the guilt of turning them down. It got to the point where I almost had to concede that all law offices looked like they were imported from a set of Law & Order (think circa 1980′s episode). Then I received my interview for the Batt Law Group, and I assumed it would be another disappointing interview.
When I entered the firm, I was taken aback by the look and feel of the office. The place had Ari Gold (I’m talking Entourage) written all over it, from the giant frosted glass doors, to the giant glass panel conference room, fine white leather chairs, and modern art. I was warmly greeted by the receptionist and I took a seat in the conference room and waited, intimidated by the sleek furniture surrounding me. Shortly thereafter I met the person that was to interview me, who was none other than the head of the firm. Walter B. Batt walked into the room and introduced himself. He was dressed casually, and his friendly demeanor went a long way of shattering my nervousness and the interview for once felt comfortable. He described my role within the Entertainment Law firm (assuming I would get hired, although at this point we know how that part of the plot ends) and went over my resume. Without going into too much detail, I left that day hoping that I would end up working at the Batt Law Group. I went to several interviews none of which sparked any kind of enthusiasm and I simply stopped applying for positions or accepting interviews till I heard back.
Then came the day that I received the call, I was at Coffee Bean “working” on some HTML (by working I mean I was learning how to do the basic stuff) and I remember the joy I felt hearing the words “you’re hired.” The following Monday I was at the office finally getting my feet into the legal pond.
Okay enough about how I got here. I want to use this blog to share my lessons and experiences working for Walter (Who I see as my mentor more than a boss). I will regularly be posting up stories. I am happy to be on board and look forward to the next 18 months. Please feel free to post any questions you might have for me or Mr. Batt and I will do my best to answer them for you. Until then!
-Ali
